Tom Crean joined the British Navy. He enjoyed sailing. He joined when he was young. He was only fifteen but he lied and said that he was sixteen because you had to be sixteen to join.
He had no money to get the train to Cork so a man lent him some money. He had ripped old clothes from the farm so another man gave him a shirt and trousers. He set off to Cork to join the British Navy.
By chance he found himself on the 1901-1904 expedition to Antarctica led by Robert Scott. Scott made Tom return to base with two sick members of the party. However the weather was so bad that Tom had turn around and rescue his friends. Robert Scott was out for so long that he froze to death. Tom Crean was one of the people in the search party who found the frozen body of Robert Scott.
